The greatest
difference in response was between the Israeli and overseas patients; for
Israelis the treatment periods were in the main 2 weeks and for overseas
patients the recommended period was 4 weeks. Those patients treated for
4 weeks showed a decided advantage over those with the shorter treatment
period. In the 4 week group more than 69% obtained a complete remission
(100% clearing), whereas a little more than 23% in the abbreviated treatment
(2 week) group showed complete clearing. It would not be justified to claim
that the difference in length of treatment is the sole contributing factor
causing the response difference. It is equally unjustified (in the light
of the evidence) not to consider seriously the length of treatment as one
of the prime reasons for such results. Prospective studies are required
to ical results. By studying a large cohort of psoriasis patients,
our intention was to find the extent of therapeutic benefit. In addition,
other pertinent parameters were examined to correlate factors that might
prove prognostic for a treatment response and of possible value in future
prospective investigations. A wide range of skin involvement was observed
in the patients seen at the DSPC (see Table 1). From the data examined,
the overall percentage improvement of psoriasis patients was similar to
previously published studies.*5 In 88% of the psoriasis patients excellent
results (i.e. 80% of skin improvement) were achieved, including almost
58% of patients who had complete clearing (table 2). These findings are
comparable to other well accepted conventional treatments available for
psoriasis.*15 Remarkably there was not a single case of a patient who completed
the recommended period of herapy without improvement.Background.
The dead sea with it?s unique optical, chemical and atmospheric properties,
provides alternative treatment for psoriasis. Methods. The records of 1448
consecutive psoriasis patients treated at Dead Sea psoriasis clinic patients
treated at a Dead Sea psoriasis clinic were retrospectively evaluated concerning
their treatment response and demographic characteristics. Results. Clearing
of 80-100% was observed in 88% of the patients treated, including almost
58% who had complete clearing. The demographic data studied that included
gender, previous treatment at the Dead Sea, prior history of hospitalization
for psoriasis, prior PUVA treatment, or a history of arthritis did not
reveal any significant relationships, although overseas patients responded
considerably better than Israelis. Conclusions. The overall response in
a large cohort of psoriasis patients treated at the Dead Sea was excellent.
Further prospective studies and basic investigations are essential to understand
the mechanisms involved and the relationships between other demographic
data and the treatment response. The
